Child, Adolescent & Young Adult Psychiatry

Outpatient Care: Child, Adolescent & Young Adult Psychiatry

Psychiatric care for patients who need ongoing support, but not immersive treatment.

Outpatient treatment at BACA is designed for people under age 29 who need consistent consultations with a therapist or psychiatrist to address mental health disorders or challenges, but whose symptoms are not severe enough to require the around-the-clock care of hospitalization or the frequency of an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Outpatient care is an excellent option after stepping down from more intensive care.

Compassionate Care for Mental Health and Behavioral Disorders

A mental health disorder that meets clinical criteria for diagnosis rarely resolves without professional support. However, not every patient needs intensive care. Sometimes the symptoms of a mental health disorder are severe enough to make life difficult and uncomfortable, but not so severe they impair the ability to function at home, school, work, or in relationships with friends, family, or peers.

That’s what outpatient treatment is for: people with symptoms that create challenges they need help overcoming, but don’t entirely disrupt or derail their lives.

At BACA, our mission is to provide intensive mental health treatment to young people and their families.

We meet patients and families where they are, learn where they want to go – meaning what they want out of treatment – and design a treatment plan that helps them achieve their goals. We take the time to get to know each patient and family. We adjust and adapt treatment to match their personality and progress. One size does not fit all, and we take the time to make sure that what we offer at BACA is what your family needs.

If you don’t know what you need our doctors can perform a full assessment and help you figure out the right path to take.

If we’re not the right match, we’ll tell you – and connect you either directly to a program that can help or to the resources you need to find an appropriate program.

Outpatient Care: Conditions We Treat

We treat a range of acuity. Some patients will need stabilization on medication, and we can transition care to their primary care provider or pediatrician. Others will need longer term psychiatric monitoring by one of our doctors.

BACA has one of the largest in-network panels of child and adolescent psychiatrists in the Bay Area. We offer in person and telehealth services and can treat a wide array of diagnoses, and can treat children, teens, and young adults diagnosed with:

  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Emotional Dysregulation
  • Suicidal Behavior
  • Self-harm/Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)

Diverse Clinical Team, Patient-Centered, Evidence-Based Treatment

Our psychiatrists are firmly grounded in the latest cutting-edge science and research in child, adolescent, and young adult mental health. But they’re not automatons: they’re innovative and intuitive. At BACA, we don’t paint by numbers or simply check items off a treatment “to-do” list. We understand that all the book learning and school knowledge doesn’t mean much if you can’t relate to a patient on a human level.

The way we relate to our patients is through empathy and compassion. Every member of our team goes far beyond what’s typical, with full commitment to our mission, which is to provide the best possible mental health treatment to members of the communities we serve.
